The Mount Washington Auto Road celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2011. The folks wanted to do something memorable to commemorate the anniversary, and came up with the idea of Alton Weagle Day. Alton Weagle was a fellow who loved the mountain and was known for doing many unique things. For the anniversary, a group of folks were invited to come and do their own unique, first-ever things on the auto road.
Our friend Dan Szczesny wrote a book, The White Mountain, with stories of the people and events that make up the history and present of the mountain area. As you know, my wife, Faith, and I are musicians and perform as Dan & Faith. Faith wrote a song about Alton Weagle Day, which we recently published as a single.
We were invited this year to come join the festivities and be a part of the day. We sang the song for the participants, and I took photos at the base of the mountain, at the summit, and from the van we were riding in on the way up and down.
At the end of the event, commemorative certificates were handed out to all the Weaglers, and they gave us one, proclaiming our song as the official song of Alton Weagle Day!
